With new manager Ronald Koeman at the helm, Barcelona are undergoing a rebuilding period. Towards that end, Barcelona are looking to get rid of some of their older players.
Ivan Rakitic has already joined his former club Sevilla whereas Arturo Vidal has joined Inter Milan. Luis Suarez looks next in line for a departure from Camp Nou. As confirmed by transfer guru Fabrizio Romano on Twitter, a total agreement has been reached between the Uruguayan and Atletico Madrid.
Suarez has a year left on his current Barcelona contract with the Catalonia club. So Barca will pay out his final year’s wages before the player rescinds his contract.
Diego Simeone has been in personal contact with Suarez and has been reported as a key figure in the transfer.
Despite news circulating around the internet that President Bartomeu was looking to block Suarez’s transfer to Atletico, the move looks imminent, along with an official announcement from the Rojiblancos.
Alvaro Morata’s loan deal from Chelsea was made permanent for €56 million just this summer before the Spaniard was shipped out on loan to his former side Juventus.
With the Italian Champions officially announcing the signing of their former player on a loan deal, Suarez will bring some valuable experience to Atletico’s frontline.
Although the Uruguayan is over 30, his ability and quality on the pitch leave no doubters. The only thing that remains to be seen is how the player adjusts to life at the Wanda Metropolitano stadium in Madrid.
Suarez was supposed to join Juventus instead, however, the deal fell through and he now finds himself poised to spend two years with Diego Simeone as he signs a contract worth €9 million per season, excluding bonuses.
Since moving to Barcelona from Liverpool six years ago, Suarez has cemented his place as one of the best forwards in Barcelona history with 198 goals to his name, third-highest scorer in a Barcelona shirt.
