Over the last few years, Dortmund have made a habit of finishing behind Bayern. However, things look different this season.
But, the question still persists. Will Westfalenstadion finally welcome a Bundesliga title this year? Let’s find out.
Key Players
- Jadon Sancho
- Erling Haaland
- Marco Reus
- Axel Witsel
- Julian Brandt
Dortmund have some of the most promising names in the attack. With the likes of Jadon Sancho and Haaland leading the front line, goals can be expected in plenty. Especially after they’ve had some time to get to know each other. Julian Brandt has also shown his quality, providing a fair share of assists himself.
When they’re not in the medical room, Axel Witsel and Marco Reus provide enough quality and experience to the team to change matches.
Winning Points
Dortmund play fast football. They’ve got players who can cut through defences with a single touch or a single pass. Thorgan Hazard, Brandt and new signing Jude Bellingham’s talent will surely provide an edge here.
They’re ferocious on the counter-attack and can tear oppositions apart if given the opportunity.
Challenges
Dortmund have issues in their defence. Silly errors happen a lot more often than the acceptable number. Roman Burki has also looked shaky a number of times and must do better.
Lucien Favre’s men also have a tough time breaking down teams that sit back deep into their own half. This is something that the coach must tackle this season if they are to have a better season than last year’s.
Transfer Activity
Mario Gotze has left the club following the expiry of his contract. Achraf Hakimi has decided to join Inter Milan whereas Leonardo Balerdi has left on loan.
Arrivals include Jude Bellingham, Thomas Meunier, Emre Can’s permanent deal and Reinier, on a loan deal from Real Madrid.
Predicted Finish: 2nd
Although this Dortmund team is the best that has been seen in years, it may not be good enough to topple the rest of the league. However, one can never truly call things in football.
Since they have such quality in each and every position, they might finally dig down deep and manage to end Bayern’s record run of winning the title.
