Will Cathcart, the head of WhatsApp, has confirmed that the platform is in the process of incorporating advertisements for its users. Cathcart’s remarks follow his earlier denial, a few weeks ago, of a Financial Times report suggesting that the Meta-owned messaging service had intentions to introduce ads.

Ads Coming on WhatsApp

During an interview with a Brazilian publication, Cathcart clarified that the users will not encounter ads in their primary message inbox. Instead, advertisements and promotional content might make appearances in other areas, such as the Status page and Channels. Cathcart emphasized that placing ads in the primary inbox is not a viable approach, as he pointed out, “When people open their inbox, they don’t want to see advertising.”

He further mentioned that there might be opportunities for ads in other parts of the messaging service. He stated, “The reason I qualified the answer is that there could be ads in other places — channels or statuses. For instance, Channels might charge people to subscribe, they might be exclusive to paid members, or the owners might want to promote the channel. But, no, we won’t put ads in your inbox.”

Meta, the parent company of WhatsApp, initially discussed introducing ads to the platform’s Status page in 2018. However, those plans were retracted in 2020, possibly due to the realization that it was an unpopular business strategy. Even WhatsApp co-founder Brian Acton expressed his disagreement with the decision to inundate WhatsApp with ads, stating, “I sold my users’ privacy to a larger benefit. I made a choice and a compromise. And I live with that every day,” in a 2018 interview with Forbes.

Cathcart has not specified when ads will be introduced to WhatsApp or how the platform intends to prevent them from becoming a nuisance. Additionally, it remains unclear what data the platform will use to target ads to WhatsApp users, given that the service’s chats are end-to-end encrypted.
