Luka Modric and Lamine Yamal become oldest and youngest El Clasico players in 23/24

Aged 38 years and 47 days, Luka Modric became the oldest player to feature in El Clasico with his appearance from the bench in Real Madrid’s 2-1 win. The derby was also Modric’s 500th outing as a Madridista, and he showed once again that age is just a number for him, turning the momentum of the match right after being introduced. 

The Croatian came on for his longtime midfield partner Toni Kroos and looked much more comfortable with the pace of the game. He produced a number of key chances for Real Madrid, and eventually assisted the match-winning goal for Jude Bellingham.

The club captain has not been played as frequently by Carlo Ancelotti this season and with his cameo, he might have given the manager a selection headache for their coming games. Modric looked much more composed and adjusted to the feverish pace of the game than Kroos, and created a plethora of opportunities in the second half. 

With Luka Modric’s contract running out at the end of the season, Madrid will be implored to extend his deal by fans after his performance in El Clasico. In spite of his age, he continues to be a vital cog for Madrid, creating a winning mentality on and off the field.  

On the other hand, Lamine Yamal became the youngest player to ever play in El Clasico aged 16 years, 3 months and 15 days. The youngster looked sharp and creative on the ball, but couldn’t help his side to a second goal to draw the game. 

After being introduced to the first team by Xavi, he has taken his chances brilliantly and has been breaking records for club and country. He has now become the youngest to feature in El Clasico, taking the mantle from Vicente Martinez who achieved the feat 82 years ago.
