Kalvin Phillips to sacrifice £17.5 million payout to force Manchester City exit in January

Kalvin Phillips is expected to leave Manchester City in the January transfer window, with several clubs keen on signing him. There were multiple offers made to the treble winners this summer as well, but Phillips turned them down in favour of staying and fighting for his place in the City squad.

But he doesn’t seem any closer to breaking into the starting line-up with Rodri, Mateo Kovacic and Matheus Nunes all ahead of the Englishman. As a result, he is set to seek a new club where he can be a regular starter to boost his chances of being selected for England in the 2024 Euros.

The former Leeds United midfielder joined City two years ago for a fee worth £42 million, impressing at the Euros with England last time around. Injuries and fitness issues prevented him from earning regular minutes under Pep Guardiola, and he has been restricted to being a squad option since.

Now, the player is reportedly open to foregoing a payout worth £17.5 million to start playing regularly. The only question is – where?

Bayern Munich, West Ham United and Newcastle United have all been linked as possible suitors for the 27-year-old. But, no formal offer has been made just yet. City are also open to a loan deal for Kalvin Phillips and will be content with a permanent deal if they can recoup much of the £42 million they spent on him.
