The AIFF have confirmed that only six foreign players will be allowed to participate in the I-League in the coming season as well. After internal discussions over the rules, the number of foreigners has been kept constant in the squads, as was the case from last season.

At any time, four foreigners will be able to play for an I-League club and one of them must be from an AFC member country. The decision to limit the number of foreigners has been taken to maximise the number of local talents which come through the domestic leagues.

Igor Stimac had requested restricting the number of foreigners to give him more players to choose from in the national team. And owing to the success of the Blue Tigers over the last few tournaments, the strategy seems to have worked well.

No foreigners will be allowed to play in the state, district, municipal or the I-League second division from the coming season for either the men or the women’s sport.

The maximum number of players which can be registered for an I-League club has been increased from 30 to 35. The number of youth players has also been assigned a quota, with eight U-22 players to be rectified for every club.
