As the PlayStation 5 nears its third year on the market, rumours about a slimmer version of the console have been circulating. A new image of the alleged PlayStation 5 “slim” has appeared, along with some hints on what the mid-generation refresh could resemble. The PS5 has amassed a fair collection of excellent games and has outsold the Xbox Series X by more than 10 million units.
While the PlayStation 5 has generally been a very popular platform, some gamers are still hoping for an upgraded model. Historically, Sony has launched a “slimline” version of each PlayStation iteration about three to four years after the original model was introduced. There have been rumours of a PS5 Pro debuting around 2025 along with discussions of a leaner PlayStation 5 debuting in 2023, but there has been no official statement from Sony on the subject.
On Twitter, a user going by the handle Gust_FAN posted what appears to be a leaked picture of the “slimline” PlayStation 5.
Gust_FAN claims that the source of the photograph is a person from China who received a shipment with the new PS5, adding that they are unsure about the source’s credibility. The rumour claims that the new PlayStation 5 has a removable disc drive, is around 2 inches shorter than the original PS5, and has the same thickness. Naturally, a grain of salt should be added to this. Only the upper half of what resembles the original PS5 is seen in the picture. The cover plates have split, which is the most obvious alteration.
Although the veracity of this “leak” is dubious at best, the PlayStation slim may in fact go on sale soon. A PS5 slim is anticipated to go on sale “later this year” for the same price as the PS5 Digital Edition. This information is based on legal documents from the Microsoft legal struggle with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) over the acquisition of Activision.
Microsoft did not provide any supporting data for its assertion, but as the holiday shopping season of 2023 is quickly approaching, fans won’t have to wait long to learn whether Sony will be releasing a small PS5 this year. One fan created a unique, thin PS5 that was even less than one inch thick, albeit there were some issues with the cooling system.
