AMD’s Ryzen Threadripper Pro 7985WX CPU, which features 64 Zen 4 cores, has been seen running on a Storm Peak motherboard platform. Benchleaks has discovered the first listing of the AMD Ryzen Threadripper Pro 7000 “Storm Peak” CPU with actual branding rather than merely an OPN code, as previously reported.

The CPU in question is the Ryzen Threadripper PRO 7985WX, which appears in the PugetSystems benchmark database as part of the Metashape 1.0 benchmark. Because this benchmark is quite GPU heavy, we may overlook the performance results for the time being.

In terms of specifications, the AMD Ryzen Threadripper PRO 7985WX has 64 cores based on the Zen 4 core architecture, which translates to 8 CCDs and 256 MB of L3 cache. The CPU will be compatible with the Storm Peak platform and should have a TDP of roughly 280-320W. The processor was running on the AMD BoulderGulch reference motherboard with 256 GB (8 x 32 GB) DDR5-5600 memory in this scenario.

The specifications of the Ryzen Threadripper PRO 7985WX don’t tell much about the platform, so we’re not sure if it’s the HEDT or the WS.

The AMD Ryzen Threadripper 7000 portfolio will include both HEDT and WS or Workstation SKUs, the former having 4-channel DDR5 / 64 PCIe Gen 5 lanes and the latter with 8-channel DDR5 / 128 PCIe Gen 5 lanes. The HEDT chips are likely to work with LGA 4844 (SP6) motherboards, whereas the WS chips are expected to work with the SP5 socket (LGA 6096).

Given that this is a Pro chip with an 8-channel DDR5 memory solution, we are most likely looking at the WS platform. The “Pro” label will most likely not appear on ordinary HEDT chips. Also, because this is a Ryzen Threadripper PRO 7985WX SKU, a 7995WX SKU can have the full 96 cores, which are the same as Genoa chips. Several SKUs were also revealed last month and are expected to appear in Q3 2023, while nothing is set in stone.
