“On Friday, Edwin van der Sar has had a bleeding around his brain. He’s currently in hospital in the intensive care unit and is in a stable condition.

“Once there is more concrete information, an update will follow,” Ajax revealed in a short official statement.

The 52-year-old left prior to the end of last season as Ajax finished third in the Eredivisie while their rivals Feyenoord won the league. Their third placed finish also saw them miss out on Champions League football for the first time since 2009. van der Sar revealed that he had made the decision after a very tough period that lasted more than a decade.

As a player, he is regarded as one of the best goalkeepers of all-time, and has made the second-highest number of appearances for the Dutch national team.
