SK Hynix has now entered the portable SSD market

SK Hynix, a South Korean memory manufacturer, has revealed its desire to enter the portable consumer SSD market. The Beetle X31, the company’s first such device, is touted to be ready to fulfil the growing need for potable SSDs and to offer a compelling blend of “performance, convenient portability, and stylish design.” The palm-sized Beetle X31 from SK Hynix connects to other devices via USB and has a transfer rate of up to 1,050 MB/s.

In terms of consumers, we are confident that SK Hynix’s arrival would be welcomed. The company has a solid reputation for producing competitive memory and storage components, and greater competition should keep rivals such as Samsung and WD / SanDisk on their toes.

First and foremost, the design of the Beetle X31 is pleasingly tiny, as characterised by SK Hynix as ‘palm-sized.’ The packaging depicts a scarab beetle resting in a sand dune, although the shape of the SK Hynix is more akin to a somewhat worn bar of soap.

A gold-colored variant is shown, with the maker claiming that the case is constructed of aluminium. The metal chassis is ideal for robustness and heat dissipation, and SK Hynix sees this as a major edge over competitors’ goods.

On paper, the transfer performance of the Beetle X31 matches that of our current best-pick SanDisk Pro-G40 SSD. However, this device is substantially smaller and weighs less than half as much as the SanDisk. SK Hynix further claims that its device has exceptional long-term performance. For example, it claims that the Beetle X31, with its large heatsink and DRAM cache, can transmit 500 GB of data at a rate of more than 900 MB/s on average.

The Beetle X31 may already be available in SK Hynix’s native market. The portable SSD will be offered in global markets, beginning with the United States later this month. At the time of writing, we didn’t know prices for the 512 GB or 1 TB variants.
