The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt has just passed a significant milestone by selling more than 50 million units since its release. The Witcher 3 was acclaimed as one of the best single-player RPG experiences in 2015, solidifying its place among the most successful games of the last decade, making it the largest hit CD Projekt Red has ever made.
Despite rather unstable releases, CD Projekt Red was able to achieve significant popularity with The Witcher 1 and 2, but it hit the jackpot with its third effort at the franchise. The devs created a 100-hour titan with multiple memorable adventures and an exciting storyline by attempting to create a big open-world game for the first time. As a result, The Witcher 3 reached six million sales in just six weeks. However, the game’s sales did not decline significantly over time, and it remained a popular title as expansions and free DLC featuring tiny missions were released.
Now, CD Projekt Red has reported that The Witcher 3 has sold more than 50 million copies worldwide.
While it is no secret that The Witcher 3 is one of the most successful games of all time, the fact that the game is still selling well eight years after its release is pretty remarkable. Around a year ago, the developer announced that The Witcher 3 sold 40 million units, implying that approximately 10 million were sold in a single year.
The fact that The Witcher 3 is still receiving updates may account for some of the game’s lasting popularity. This year, the game’s next-gen version received a few improvements, resolving a few performance issues and increasing the game’s graphic quality, which was always fantastic from the start but looks much better with ray tracing. Another cause for the increase in sales could be Netflix’s Witcher series, which has already had two seasons and has been a great smash, introducing even more people to the saga’s universe.
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
