AMD to feature the new XSwitch Interconnect in its upcoming Instinct MI450 Accelerators

The Instinct MI450, AMD’s next-generation HPC accelerator, is said to use a brand-new connection fabric. According to an internal email obtained by HXL (@9550Pro), AMD may soon start talking about its next-generation HPC accelerators.

Although the business has yet to deploy its Instinct MI300 APUs, which are expected later this year, the Instinct MI400 series is already in the works and will power next-generation data centre and cloud platforms in the coming years.

According to the email, three new products are being discussed: Weisshorn, Instinct MI450, and XSwitch (and beyond). Weisshorn is the codename for AMD Venice CPUs, which will use the Zen 6 “Morpheus” architecture and be part of the EPYC portfolio, according to Kepler_L2.

These chips are projected to be available in 2025-2026. The AMD Instinct MI450 will be part of the MI400 family, which will use a future CDNA GPU architecture as well as a mix of x86 CPU architectures.

Given AMD’s emphasis on chiplets, the Instinct MI300 is expected to have multiple varieties of the same cores across the next-generation APUs, implying that the Instinct MI300 is simply a taste of what to anticipate from team red.

Kepler_L2 has also given possible codenames that lead to Mercury, Venus, and Earth. AMD has previously used stars as internal GPU naming standards.

The Instinct MI100 series was dubbed “Arcturus,” and the MI200 series was dubbed “Aldebaran.” In addition to these, the red team is slated to unveil a fresh new interconnect known as XSwitch, which will likely be a major competitor to NVIDIA’s NVLINK. The details are unknown, but HXL published a photo of the MI300 node’s structure.

Six infinite fabric interconnects connect four Instinct MI300 APUs, and because the CPU is immediately onboard the main APU interposer, you can have a fast on-die interconnect close to the GPU cores. This isn’t the XSwitch connectivity, which might be drastically different if AMD is doing everything from scratch.
