Overwatch 2 Season 6 will be different and the Biggest yet

Blizzard has recently provided a preview of the upcoming roadmap for Overwatch 2, outlining its plans for the next three seasons. While each season promises an array of exciting content, Season 6 appears to be particularly packed and may introduce the most significant changes to the game thus far.

One notable revelation is that Overwatch 2’s Season 6 will introduce another support hero to the game. Speculation around a Lifeweaver rework in Overwatch 2 suggests that the focus is currently on revamping the support role. Alongside the new hero, Season 6 aims to revamp the existing progression system, and introduce PvE-based missions, new events, and more.

Fans have long anticipated the addition of PvE content in Overwatch 2, and it seems Season 6 will fulfill Blizzard’s promise in a slightly different manner than expected. Previously, Blizzard outlined plans for a PvE mode at BlizzCon 2019, suggesting a future update would introduce the mode all at once. However, the Season 6 roadmap now clarifies the approach to PvE.

While PvE content is confirmed for Season 6, Blizzard plans to implement it in smaller iterations. Instead of talent trees and other scrapped elements, Story Missions will be introduced, offering fans the opportunity to experience smaller-scale PvE content. Specific details about these Story Missions are limited at this time, but they will form part of Overwatch 2’s ongoing content updates.

While concerns about Overwatch 2’s PvE approach have been addressed, this change may have unexpected positive outcomes.

With the release of PvE content in smaller segments, Blizzard has the freedom to introduce non-canon scenarios, allowing for unique experiences. Additionally, the absence of certain features opens the possibility of rewarding players based on performance in Story Missions, such as speedrunning rewards or scenario-specific achievements.

Overwatch 2 remains committed to its focus on the Support position. Although limited information is available about the upcoming support hero, fan speculation is already rampant. The image used on Blizzard’s roadmap, initially appearing unremarkable, is the same image used for the in-game poster of Peru. While this could be misdirection, it suggests that Blizzard’s next support hero may be Peruvian.

In response to player feedback regarding the grind in Overwatch 2, Season 6 will introduce a new player progression system and a hero-specific progression system, aiming to provide more rewarding experiences based on players’ time invested in the game. The player progression system is expected to revamp the traditional leveling progression, while the Hero Mastery system is likely to reward players for their dedication to specific characters, similar to mechanics in games like DOTA.

Currently, Overwatch 2 is available in early access for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
