Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s time at Manchester United was a mixed spell, with several highs and lows involved. The former United forward recently spoke out at “An Evening with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer”, and revealed that he had approached the board with the intent to sign Erling Haaland.

The Norwegian managed Haaland when he was in charge of Molde, and the striker went on to play for RB Salzburg, Borussia Dortmund. Now, he is breaking records every week on the blue side of Manchester. And in hindsight, it will be a decision that the United board will regret heavily.

Erling Haaland: Why Manchester City, not Real Madrid?

“I got in contact with United because we had this talented striker who they should have had,” said Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. “But they didn’t listen, unfortunately. Four million, I asked for. But they never signed him. Four million! Don’t ask (where he is now). He’s too good…”

In his very first season in the Premier League, Erling Haaland has broken Alan Shearer and Andy Cole’s record of scoring 34 goals in one campaign. He has already won the FWA Footballer of the Year award, and is in contention for the Ballon d’Or as well.

City have a chance to replicate their close rivals by winning a treble. And Haaland is one of the main reasons that they have a great chance at it. United’s reasons for not signing the Norwegian were unexplained, and they now need to recruit a new number 9 to lead the line this summer. But the chances of the new striker matching Haaland’s numbers look very unlikely, regardless of who it turns out to be.
