A government committee recommends banning diesel four-wheelers by 2027

The Energy Transition Advisory Committee, a panel under the oil ministry, recommended that India should ban the use of diesel-powered four-wheelers by the year 2027 and switch to gas and electric-powered vehicles in polluted cities and cities with more than a million inhabitants. This would help the country concentrate on clean energy.

The group, which was led by Tarun Kapoor, also stated that starting in 2024, no new diesel-powered buses should be introduced. All city buses need to be electric by 2030. The group advised that no further diesel buses for city transportation should be added after 2024, according to a research posted on the website of the energy ministry, as reported by Reuters.

The report also recommended that the government consider a “targeted extension” of incentives provided under the Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Electric and Hybrid Vehicles scheme (FAME) beyond March 31 in order to provide the much-needed impetus for the usage of electric vehicles throughout the nation.

The panel also proposed that starting in 2024, new registrations be limited to electric-powered city delivery vehicles and that there should be more use of railroads and gas-powered trucks for the transportation of freight. In the next two to three years, the entire rail network is reportedly going to be electric. Additionally, it stated that long-distance buses should run on electricity for a longer period of time, with petrol serving as a transition fuel for the following 10 to 15 years.

In order to reach its 2070 net zero objectives, India, one of the countries with the highest greenhouse gas emissions, plans to generate 40% of its electricity from renewable sources. In India, diesel accounts for roughly 2/5th of all refined fuel use, with the transportation industry using 80% of it.

In addition, the panel recommended that India consider developing underground gas storage, which meets two months’ worth of demand and is expected to rise at a compound average growth rate of 9.78% between 2020 and 2050. Additionally, it suggested that foreign gas-producing corporations participate in the utilization of depleted oil and gas fields, salt caverns, and aquifers for the storage of gas.
