Major League Soccer created history in Canada on Saturday night as a female trio officiated Vancouver vs Colorado. This is something really special, and a brilliant history has been made.
History in Major League Soccer: female trio officiates game
Tori Penso was the content referee, with assistant referee Brooke Mayo and fourth official Felisha Mariscal. This is the first time in history that a female trio has officiated the men’s pitch.
Following Javain Brown’s foul on Jonathan Lewis in the 78th minute, Penso rewarded a penalty. The Diego Rubio spot kick was saved by Vancouver goalkeeper Yohei Takaoka. With that stop, his scoreless streak is expanded to 410 minutes which, at present, is the longest in the league.
Colorado netted the ball off a free-kick in the 57th minute. However, it was ruled the Rapids’ Lalas Abubakar interfered with Takaoka as he was willing to catch the cross.
The game concluded with a draw, keeping Vancouver in ninth place in the Western Conference standings.
Penso recorded history in 2020, as the first female referee in a Major League Soccer game in two decades, after Sandy Hunt.
Meanwhile, Colorado keeps on to near the base of the West in 12th, with nine points from 10 matches- six off the bottom.
Who’s next for Vancouver?
After the draw, Vancouver is ready to play their next game.
Vancouver is up against Minnesota at BC Place. They’ll be hosting them on Saturday. The Rapids’ will go to Tinseltown for a match at the Galaxy on the same day itself.
It will be interesting to watch what’s in the pile for the fans for these two games.
