Smartphone manufacturing demand will most likely create around 150K new jobs in India

In India, up to 150,000 new Smartphone manufacturing jobs are anticipated to be created this fiscal year as top corporations “scout” for workers to meet their current demands and future expansion plans.

As a result of the global shift to Smartphone manufacturing outside of China and the Indian government’s production-linked incentives (PLI) programme, leading handset manufacturers and producers of related devices plan to hire heavily in the nation, according to staffing firms like TeamLease, Randstad, Quess, and Ciel HR Services.

According to staffing company officials, of the estimated 120,000–150,000 new jobs to be created in this sector this fiscal year, about 30,000–40,000 are likely to be direct jobs and the remaining indirect roles will primarily be in the Smartphone manufacturing sector.

In addition to Tata Group, Salcomp, Samsung, and Nokia, they claim that Foxconn, Wistron, and Pegatron, which are Apple’s contract manufacturers in India, will likely increase their workforce there.

Officials from Quess and Ciel HR reported that this fiscal’s mandates are 100% higher than those from FY23. The companies in the South are hiring both for new and existing facilities as some of them export more than $1 billion worth of mobile phones from India.

The total number of jobs in this sector could exceed 500,000 this fiscal year, according to estimates by Quess, with significant off-roll hiring given that some projects are temporary in nature due to export and demand seasonality.

According to Narayan of TeamLease, jobs in the sector are receiving a significant boost from the government’s PLI scheme and many companies’ long-term plans to move production to India in order to first tap the domestic market and then use the base here to grow production to support sizable exports to the rest of the world.

According to Yeshab Giri, chief commercial officer at Randstad India for staffing and technologies, many multinational corporations have established Smartphone manufacturing facilities there, creating more than 100,000 new jobs.

According to him, their growing interest in India could contribute to the creation of 120,000 new jobs in FY24. The majority of these jobs—40,000 direct jobs and 80,000 indirect jobs—are concentrated in the Smartphone manufacturing sector, with minor contributions from retail.

Randstad forecasts that by FY26, Smartphone manufacturing will generate at least 300,000 new jobs, with 200,000 of those coming from indirect employment and one-third from direct employment.

Electronics, electrical, and information technology technicians, as well as assembly operators, line supervisors, mobile assemblers, junior technicians, engineering managers, and data engineers, are in demand.
