Samsung will be reportedly manufacturing its own GPUs

Samsung and AMD collaborated to create the Xclipse 920 GPU for the Exynos 2200, and it appears that the SoC was the platform the Korean giant needed to advance to the next stage, which involved creating a custom GPU. This practice is not new, as companies like Apple and Qualcomm which specialise in creating smartphone chipsets continually introduce silicon with unique GPUs.

Based on AMD’s RDNA2 architecture, the Xclipse 920 GPU, which is a component of the Exynos 2200, was developed. According to Revegnus, who posted on Twitter, the custom GPU will apparently be created using the same architecture. Samsung won’t create a standalone GPU, though, and will probably need AMD’s assistance to create an IP.

Samsung relied on ARM’s Mali GPU designs for many years up until the Exynos 2100, but this could all change.

While there aren’t many issues with ARM’s GPU designs, Qualcomm and Apple’s efforts show that Samsung’s performance gap can only be closed by a special GPU designed specifically for mobile devices. Revegnus tweets that we shouldn’t wait impatiently for the introduction of this graphics processor because it won’t happen for at least three more years.

If the performance of the custom GPU does not meet the company’s expectations, Samsung may also choose to delay the launch, according to this alleged timeline. Even though the Korean juggernaut hasn’t exactly had the best luck with its smartphone chipset releases, this objective is still achievable with the right talent.

Along with the Xclipse 930 GPU, Samsung is also developing the Exynos 2300; however, a previous rumour claimed that the Tensor G3 will be based on the Exynos 2300 and will be found in the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro. These details imply that the business is committed to releasing chipsets. Additionally, there was a rumour that Samsung was pursuing the development of unique CPU cores, which the company later denied.
