Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 will have 15% higher clock speeds than its predecessor

Qualcomm made significant improvements to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, and those characteristics are expected to be improved with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. We now have some information on the clock speeds of the Cortex-X4, and they are a significant improvement over the Cortex-X3.

Qualcomm switched to a different CPU cluster, which was one of the main reasons for the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2’s performance boost. Despite sticking with one Cortex-X3 core, the company increased the number of performance cores to four while decreasing the number of efficiency cores to three.

According to RGcloudS, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 will retain that configuration, but the Cortex-X4 is expected to run at 3.70GHz.

Snapdragon gen 3 is indeed strong
Bigger jump compared to last gen

Apparently the main contributor was arm itself, especially X4 & 1,4,3 config

This results in a 15% increase in clock speed over the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2’s Cortex-3.20GHz X3’s frequency. However, it is unclear whether the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for Galaxy will have the same 3.70GHz clock speed as the Galaxy S24 family or if Qualcomm and Samsung have something different in mind. We also did not consider the speeds of the remaining seven cores, which will have a significant impact on multi-core performance.

On Twitter, RGcloudS believes the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for Galaxy will outperform the A17 Bionic, at least on paper. However, he previously stated that Qualcomm’s upcoming flagship SoC could have the highest single-core performance of any smartphone SoC, effectively beating the A17 Bionic.

A previous engineering sample of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 was leaked to deliver performance that dethroned the A16 Bionic, but real-world results are likely to differ significantly, so while we have a lot to look forward to, a lot can change. Efficiency is one area where the A17 Bionic is expected to excel. With Apple securing TSMC’s 3nm supply, Qualcomm is likely to stick with 4nm, the same process used to mass produce the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2.
