Twitter announced on Friday that only paid subscribers will be able to use text messages as a two-factor authentication (2FA) method to secure their accounts. Two-factor authentication, which is intended to increase account security, necessitates the use of a second authentication method in addition to a password.

The Social Media supports two-factor authentication via text message, authentication app, and security key. However, as a desperate move to generate funds, the social media giant is looking for new ways to generate revenue after Elon Musk bought the company.

Effective March 20, 2023, only Twitter Blue subscribers will be able to use text messages as their two-factor authentication method. Other accounts can use an authentication app or security key for 2FA. Learn more here:https://t.co/wnT9Vuwh5n

If you don’t start paying for a Blue subscription ($8 per month on Android; $11 per month on iOS) or switch your account to use a far more reliable authenticator app or physical security key by March 20th, the service will simply disable your 2FA.

The company believes phone-number-based 2FA is being abused by “bad actors,” according to a blog post published on Wednesday and linked to in the company’s tweet. The blue check mark, which was previously reserved for verified accounts of politicians, celebrities, journalists, and other public figures, is now available to anyone willing to pay.
