Vedanta is very serious about making semiconductors in India

David Reed has been named the new CEO of Vedanta‘s semiconductor division, the company said today. He will be in charge of establishing a cutting-edge semiconductor fabrication unit as well as an assembling and testing unit.

David, a 35-year veteran of the semiconductor industry, has extensive international experience in supply chain management, and the establishment of a full semiconductor ecosystem, including research and development, global execution of wafer fabrication, total quality management, assembly and testing, and packaging.

Over the course of a career that has taken him to places like Singapore, Japan, the United States, the Philippines, Italy, and Germany, he has developed a reputation for expanding businesses, boosting revenues, producing shareholder value, carrying out joint ventures, and creating successful teams. David has worked on numerous boards, helping to develop the growth and financial plans of large technology companies.

Reed previously held the positions of Executive Vice President and General Manager of worldwide operations at NXP Semiconductors. He transferred to NXP as a result of Freescale Semiconductor and NXP’s merger, where he had been Senior Vice President for Manufacturing Operations. He was formerly GlobalFoundries’ Vice President and General Manager. He started his career in 1984 at Texas Instruments, where he spent 26 years in a range of leadership positions all across the world. He studied chemical engineering and business administration at Austin College, Texas A&M University, and the University of Dallas, respectively.

David Reed is a welcome addition to Vedanta, according to Chairman of Vedanta Anil Agarwal. “He has had a considerable impact on the development of the entire global semiconductor industry. As we set out on this crucial journey with Foxconn to support the development of a viable domestic electronic manufacturing ecosystem in India in keeping with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of an AatmaNirbhar Bharat, his knowledge and experience will be a great advantage.

Speaking on his hiring, David Reed said, “I am thrilled to be a part of this project since it represents a watershed moment for the worldwide semiconductor industry. I’m excited to take the helm of a varied group of extraordinarily brilliant and dedicated individuals and to work with them to realize this historic endeavor. In order to establish India’s first semiconductor fab unit, a semiconductor assembling and testing unit, and a display fab unit in the state of Gujarat, Vedanta, and the Gujarat government signed an MoU in September 2022.
