Only a few weeks left for the WPL auction 2023 to start officially. The BCCI got done with the franchise ownership auction recently and in early February, an auction will be held for bidding the players.

The WPL auction 2023 was held on January 25 and a total of 17 bidders participated. Out of 17, seven bidders already own a team in the Indian premiere League. They are Mumbai Indians, Delhi Capitals, Kolkata Knight Riders, Punjab Kings, Rajasthan Royals, Royal Challengers Bangalore, and Sunrisers Hyderabad. Previously, 33 entities wanted to take part in this auction.

Besides the ten franchises, Adani Group, Capri. Global, Haldiram’s Group, Torrent Pharma, Apollo Pipes, Amrit Leela Enterprises, Shriram Group, and Slingshot 369 Ventures Private Limited took part in this auction. The winners can own a team for only up to ten years.

Earlier, the BCCI shortlisted ten cities but a bidder could own only a single city franchise. The cities were Kolkata, Mumbai, Chennai, Ahmedabad, Delhi, Lucknow, Indore, Bengaluru, Guwahati, and Dharamsala. Three IPL teams were successful in buying a franchise while only two new entities could buy teams in WPL.

WPL auction 2023: Entities that won the bid in the auction

Previously, the Adani Group failed to bag one IPL team. In the WPL auction 2023, they bid for the highest amount, approximately 1289 crores to acquire the Ahmedabad franchise. Reliance-owned Mumbai Indians sealed the deal for 912 crores. The third most expensive team was Bengaluru acquired by Royal Challengers Bangalore for 901 crores.

Delhi capitals have taken the fourth spot in terms of price as they shelled out 810 crores to get the Delhi franchise. The second new entrant Capri Global got the Lucknow franchise for 757 crores.

  2. Mumbai ( 4 bidders)– Highest bid for 912 crore and lowest bid for 100.20 crore
  3. Bengaluru (12 bidders)– Highest bid for 901 crore and lowest bid for 240 crore
  4. Lucknow (8 bidders)– Highest bid for 912 crore and lowest bid for 304 crore
  5. Delhi (8 bidders)– Highest bid for 912 crore and lowest bid for 305 crore
  6. Chennai (12 bidders)– Highest bid for 1289 crore and lowest bid for 240 crore
  7. Dharamshala (6 bidders)– Highest bid for 737.37 crore and lowest bid for 178 crore
  8. Guwahati (8 bidders)– Highest bid for 1289 crore and lowest bid for 180 crore
  9. Indore (11 bidders)– Highest bid for 912.89 crore and lowest bid for 176 crore
  10. Kolkata (9 bidders)– Highest bid for 1289 crore and lowest bid for 340 crore

With this ownership auction, BCCI earned a total of 4669.99 crores as the five franchises were selected.
