Amazon announces its Amazon Air service in India

Amazon launched Amazon Air on 23 January 2023 in India in an effort to speed up delivery and improve the transportation system. The massive e-commerce company intends to use a Boeing 737-800 plane’s whole cargo capacity and make deliveries in Delhi, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, and Mumbai. The Company has partnered with Bengaluru-based cargo carrier Quikjet to launch India’s first air service.

Amazon is the first online merchant in India to cooperate with a carrier service to provide a specialized air network for shipments as a consequence. Akhil Saxena, Vice President – Customer Fulfillment, Global Customer Service, at the event said, “This launch will support 1.1 million sellers in India.”

However, it has been almost six years since Amazon Air first debuted in the USA. Amazon Air was first announced in the US in 2016 and then temporarily tested there as well, with over 30 Boeing cargo planes. It’s interesting to note that Prime Air, a different service offered by the company that uses drones to carry packages, has been labelled on the e-commerce giant’s air cargo planes in India.

The event in Hyderabad was attended by KT Rama Rao, the Minister of Industry and Commerce for Telangana. This comes after the company closed down three business operations in the nation in 2022 due to a global slowdown: a food delivery named Amazon Food, a wholesale distribution known as Amazon Distribution, and its EdTech Venture Academy. Amazon’s direct rival in India is Flipkart, which is supported by Walmart.

As the world economy enters a recession, the company is experiencing difficult times on the international front, much like its counterparts. According to a Bloomberg story from last week, the e-commerce behemoth intends to remove personnel from its retail and human resources divisions.

The source said that further teams will also be affected, however, there is currently little information available. Recently, the e-commerce giant in the US sacked a large number of hourly warehouse and delivery workers.
