Barcelona manages to keep title race dream alive defeating Espanyol

Barcelona hosted Espanyol in the Catalan derby. Espanyol needed a win to save them from relegation while Barcelona are chasing the LaLiga title, on which Real Madrid has already put their one hand.

It seemed Barcelona was back in form after the trio of Messi-Suarez-Griezmann clicked in their last game against Villareal. But against Espanyol, it was the same old slow and toothless Barcelona. No one tried to keep the ball in their feet and provide some moments of magic. The first half was deservingly 0-0.

After the restart, Ansu Fati who came on as a substitute for Semedo saw the red card in the 50th minute. It seemed Espanyol finally had the chance to save them from getting relegated. But just 3 minutes after the red card incident, Lozano was foolish enough to make a dangerous tackle on Pique to be sent off and thus destroying all their hopes of playing in the LaLiga next season.

The two teams were down to 10 men and Barcelona took the advantage by breaking into Espanyol’s defence thanks to Griezmann’s run, Messi’s deflected shot that came into Saurez’s foot, who made no mistake to slot the ball home and write his name into Barcelona’s history by becoming their third-highest goalscorer.

The Uruguayan striker has now scored 195 goals for Barcelona and surpassed Ladislao Kubala who had 194 goals.

Suarez posted a message on Twitter: “Proud to continue making history at FC Barcelona.”

Luis Suarez is one of the most lethal strikers in world football. His injury has caused his form to dip in recent times but his quality on the ball is still there. He doesn’t take penalties or free-kicks for Barcelona. So all of his 195 goals have been the result of his pure goal scoring instinct.

Suarez is surely on the right track to become one of the legends of this iconic football club!
