Argentina have won the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, defeating France 4-2 on penalties after a 3-3 draw for the ages. Labelled by many as the best final to have ever been played in all these years, here are all the individual award winners from yesterday’s presentation.
Young Player of the Tournament – Enzo Fernandez
The Argentina midfielder earned the award for the best young player throughout the competition. He made a name for himself with a very impressive goal against Mexico, before establishing himself as a key player under Lionel Scaloni at the age of 21.
World Cup Golden Boot – Kylian Mbappe
Only two people in the history of football have scored a hat-trick in a World Cup final. And despite this feat, Mbappe came out on the losing side of the game. For scoring eight goals in seven games at the 2022 World Cup, Mbappe earned the Golden Boot award ahead of Messi, who scored seven.
World Cup Golden Glove – Emiliano Martinez
The Argentina goalkeeper had not even made his debut when Argentina last competed at a World Cup. And now, he has a winner’s medal and the Golden Glove for being the best goalkeeper at the tournament. Two penalty shootout wins, and a consistently strong presence at the back have earned him the award he very well deserves.
Player of the Tournament – Lionel Messi
Right up there with one of the GOATs now, Messi scored seven goals and provided three assists as Argentina won the World Cup. He is also the only player to have scored in every knockout fixture including the final. As a result, he has been given the trophy for being the best player in the entire tournament, alongside the coveted golden trophy.
