Horizon Forbidden West Burning Shores DLC is coming to PS5 Next Year

Horizon Forbidden West’s first big addition, named Burning Shores, will transport Aloy to a devastated Los Angeles next year. This DLC was released earlier this week, along with reports that the next chapter of Horizon Forbidden West’s tale would transport players to California.

Many predicted that the DLC will be announced at The Game Awards 2022, which aired earlier today, based on hints and teases towards the title Burning Shores and a prior leak on the Horizon Forbidden West DLC. The introduction of this DLC would follow in the footsteps of The Frozen Wilds DLC, which was released less than a year after Horizon Zero Dawn.

Burning Shores was officially revealed at The Game Awards 2022 with a new teaser depicting series protagonist Aloy riding on the back of a Sunwing through a run-down Los Angeles. The Capitol Records Building and the Hollywood Sign are among the Los Angeles sights visible. The trailer ends with a machine traversing the nearby mountains. In contrast to Horizon Zero Dawn’s The Frozen Wilds DLC, which transported players to the frigid conditions of Yellowstone, the Burning Shores appear to be overtaken by volcanic activity. Horizon Forbidden West: Burning Shores will be released on April 19, 2023, for the PlayStation 5.

Burning Shores, like the Phantom Liberty DLC for Cyberpunk 2077, will be exclusive to the PS5 and will not be available on previous-generation platforms. “To achieve this grand vision technically and creatively, we’ve made the difficult decision to focus all our efforts on making an incredible experience exclusively for the PlayStation 5 console,” according to a statement on Guerilla Games’ website. Along with the upcoming Horizon Call of the Mountain game for the PSVR 2, the PS5 appears to be the Horizon series’ new permanent home.

Fans who played the PC version of Horizon Zero Dawn will be particularly affected by this change. PC users who want to complete the Horizon experience will now need to buy a PS5, which is still difficult to come by for many. This could be part of Sony’s goal to convert more PC players to the PS5 by making sequels to successful PC ports exclusive to the device.

A similar phenomenon occurred with the release of God of War Ragnarok the same year that the 2018 God of War was released on PC, pushing PC gamers to acquire PlayStation consoles to experience the next chapter in the God of War tale. Fans of these franchises may have more cause than ever to purchase a PS5, and Horizon Forbidden West: Burning Shores is guaranteed to increase console sales.

Horizon Forbidden West: Burning Shores will release for the PS5 on April 19, 2023.
