France have qualified for the quarter finals of the 2022 World Cup, defeating Poland 3-1 in their Round of 16 fixture. They will be facing England for a spot in the last four of the tournament.
The first half saw the Polish come out attacking on all fronts, and they were quite impressive with the chances they created. However, they could not produce a goal to show for it.
Mbappe and Giroud shine in France’s Round of 16 win
While Olivier Giroud missed an absolute sitter from point-blank range, he made amends by scoring later in the first half. The AC Milan forward became France’s all-time highest goalscorer with his strike, surpassing Thierry Henry.
France were able to take control of the game much better in the second half. And on the counter attack, Kylian Mbappe produced a powerful, clinical finish to make it 2-0. The PSG star then doubled his tally with a goal from the left flank. Although Szczesny was able to get a hand to it, the shot was just too powerful to stop.
Robert Lewandowski was able to get a consolation goal with the final touch of the ball from the penalty spot. His initial effort was saved by Hugo Lloris, but it had to be retaken since he was off his line. And he made no mistake the second time.
