Mexico national team manager Gerardo Martino has resigned from his position following the 2022 World Cup. At the Qatar edition, El Tri failed to win their first two matches at the World Cup finals for the first time since 1978. That was also the last year that they failed to go past the group stage.

Despite their win against Saudi Arabia in the final game, they were eliminated on goal difference. Had they been able to defeat Saudi Arabia by a larger margin, they could have made it through to the knockout stages despite the poor start.

Gerardo Martino resigns from Mexico national team

“I am the main one responsible for this frustration we have and this disappointment,” said Martino, whose contract is due to expire. “It’s a great sadness and I assume responsibility for this huge failure.”

“I don’t think we were knocked out in the previous matches, but today,” he said.

He was unpopular following their Gold Cup loss against the USMNT in 2021, and the board decided not to act despite their poor attacking display in the build-up to the tournament in Qatar.

“My contract ended when the referee sounded the final whistle. There is nothing more to do,” Gerardo Martino confirmed following their exit. And now, the search for a new head coach begins for the board.
