Tennis player Emma Raducanu who’s 20 years old received an MBE from King Charles on Tuesday. She surprised everyone by winning the US Open in 2021 as an 18-year-old. This was the honour made by King Charles in a ceremony at Windsor Castle in England.
She was given this honour for her excellent performance in tennis. She scripted history in 2021 by entering the US Open as a Qualifies and making it to the main draw. She ranked only 150th in the world and went straight up to the qualifier without dropping a set in the tournament. In fact, she was the first-ever qualifier in the Open era who rose to World No. 23 after winning the tournament.
She became the first qualifier of any nationality and the first female British player to win a Grand Slam singles championship since Virginia Wade in 1977. “It’s been a great to receive my honour today from his majesty the King. I feel extremely grateful,”– she said.
Apart from her honour, her DIOR black midi dress has been the talking point. She was also seen sporting a boater cap as well, her total attire costing around £10,000.
She began her career as a full-time tennis player in 2022 on the WTA Tour. She had to endure pathetic results with the three-second-round existence in Grand Slam.
She has been suffering from multiple injuries for which she didn’t win another title in other tournaments. Further, due to her poor performance, she has been dropped to World No.75 in the rankings.
She is recovering from an injury and very recently joined the practice session. There’s a possibility that she will return to the game next month itself, at an exhibition event in Abu Dhabi called Mubadala World Tennis Championship and face World’s No.2 player Ons Jabeur.
The Turner Prize-nominated artist and filmmaker Sir Isaac Julien was also given the award on Tuesday by the King for his contributions to diversity and inclusion in the arts.
