Chelsea exploring a move from Stamford Bridge to a new 60,000 stadium in Earls Court

Chelsea are planning to reopen their plans to move to Earl’s Court from Stamford Bridge. The initial idea came up in 2013 under the ownership of Roman Abramovich, but was put down by Hammersmith and Fulham Council.

According to the Daily Mail, the move is difficult, but not impossible as of right now. The plans indicate a 60,000 capacity stadium on a 40-acre site which was sold to property developers in 2019 for £425 million, but is yet to be developed.

Chelsea considering move from Stamford Bridge

The club have put together a team to oversee plans to create an elite new stadium — and a 60,000-seat ground on a 40-acre site in Earls Court is among the options that will be considered.#CFC

Chelsea are also considering a different plan in order to renovate their stadium. They are exploring buying a 1.2 acre site next to Stamford Bridge for £50 million in order to improve the current situation of the stadium.

There are also talks of Stamford Bridge being demolished stand by stand, and then rebuilt. But any such plan, even if they were to leave the Bridge, would require permission from Chelsea Pitch Owners, who have a 180-year lease. Without their permission, the Blues can’t even use the Chelsea FC name.

It now remains to be seen how Todd Boehly will approach the stadium renovation idea, which has been shelved for several years now.
