Analysing what went wrong for Real Madrid as they lost 3-2 to Rayo Vallecano

Real Madrid suffered their first loss in La Liga last night, coming up short against Rayo Vallecano away from home. Two penalties were awarded in the game, with one going to each side, as the hosts defeated the reigning champions 3-2.

Despite dominating the game in terms of the possession, and the amount of passes completed, there were some key areas in which the team was lacking.

What went wrong for Real Madrid against Rayo Vallecano?

Los Blancos were without Karim Benzema and Toni Kroos for the match, with the Frenchman injured and the midfielder suspended.

A lack of effectiveness in the final third was clear for them, which resulted in a poor attacking display even though they dominated the ball. The absence of Benzema in the build-up play as well as in front of goal made the attack look almost harmless.

Thibaut Courtois saved the second half penalty, but it had to be retaken since he was off his line. And Oscar Trejo beat the Belgian the second time around to give his side the lead.

Tired legs could be another reason behind the performance we saw from Real Madrid, since Carlo Ancelotti is not very keen on rotating the team. And with the World Cup in just over a week, players might be looking to preserve themselves for the tournament.

The break will allow the players and coach to regroup and work on the areas that they have lagged behind in, which could lead to a resurgence in their form.
