A MLED display that is almost 65% transparent has been announced by BOE

Transparent displays are attractive for smart store windows, but they have drawbacks, including limited pixel density, poor brightness, and—worst of all—poor transparency. With the help of its new MLED display technology, the display manufacturer BOE says it has discovered a solution to these issues.

BOE’s transparent MLED display features

Over 65% of the light coming from behind the display passes via MLED displays. This new technology has reportedly been used by the company to create a 16″ panel, and it is also remarkably bright (1,000 nits) (and capable of contrast ratios of 100,000:1).

Actually, there is a transmittance of over 90% in the space between the pixels. In order to obtain an average transmittance of 65+ percent for the entire panel, the BOE team strategically arranged the wiring to the pixels and the pixel structure.

The display becomes more transparent the wider the space between the pixels. However, if you want a high-quality image as opposed to just transparency, that is a problem. The 16″ panel described before has 2.5K resolution, therefore BOE’s improved layout appears to have also fixed it. In order to put this accomplishment into perspective, LG talked about OLED screens with 45% transparency earlier this year, which were installed on a futuristic bus that was touring Suwon, South Korea.

The BOE panel is reportedly undergoing testing by TÜV Rheinland for its Eye Comfort Certification (which measures things like the blue light emitted, reflectivity, contrast, flicker, and more). When the initial MLED displays will be available for purchase is unknown according to BOE.
