Premier League set to revamp VAR from 23/24 season

The Premier League is set to introduce semi-automated offside VAR decisions from next season. And this is expected to dramatically reduce the amount of time wasted on the pitch due to the millimetre-based offside calls that have been seen recently.

The Champions League is already using this technology to be able to make offside calls in a matter of seconds, without having controversial decisions. And from next season, the English top flight will have the same technology.

Premier League set for massive change to VAR

The Premier League is expected to push ahead with plans to use semi-automated offsides for next season. Those in the Champions League this season plus Arsenal – already have at least the basic Hawkeye infrastructure in place.

The proposal will be voted on after the World Cup in November, and it is quite difficult to see any clubs saying no to the decision. The Champions League has tried out the technology to a good level of success, and it will now be used by English officials too.

Subjective decisions such as handballs will still be made by the on pitch referee alongside VAR. Which means that those might still spark up heated debates among the fans. However, the offside decisions will soon become less likely to do the same.

More importantly, we can expect a better flow to the games, as there will be less stoppage due to officiating.
