Manchester City were able to come back from 3-1 down to salvage a point against Newcastle United at St James’s Park. The reigning champions looked set for defeat, but showed us why they are the reigning champions with two quick goals completely changing the game.

Ilkay Gundogan opened the scoring, tapping in a perfect cross from Bernardo Silva on the right flank. Their lead would not last long, with Miguel Almiron scoring the equaliser from close range. The goal saw handball appeals from many City players, but VAR allowed it to stand.

Callum Wilson produced a brilliant finish shortly before half time to give his side the lead. And in the process, made it two assists from Allan Saint-Maximin. The Frenchman’s energy was on display throughout the game, and City struggled to deal with him for the majority of the game.

Kieran Trippier scored a perfect free-kick in the 54th minute to make it 3-1, at which point, it looked like they were set for victory. But, only ten minutes later, goals from Erling Haaland and Bernardo Silva saw Manchester City back on level terms.

Trippier was shown a red card in the 74th minute for a lunging tackle on Kevin De Bruyne. But, VAR overturned the decision and he was allowed to stay on with a yellow. City were unable to break the low block of the Magpies for a fourth time to earn all three points, and eventually had to settle for a draw.
