Intel creates a record by reaching ‘Power-On’ with its 14th Gen Meteor Lake CPU

Michelle Johnston Holthaus, Intel’s EVP and GM of Client Computing Group, has revealed that the 14th Gen Meteor Lake CPUs have reached ‘Power-On’. The ‘Power-On’ is a significant milestone for Intel’s 14th-generation Meteor Lake processors. For a long time, the blue team has been sharing Meteor Lake milestones.

In May 2021, the chip’s computing tile was taped in, followed by the compute tile ‘Power-On’ a few months later in October 2022. It has now reached complete power-on, allowing Intel to begin constructing the first engineering chips around it before shipping it to consumers and starting mass manufacturing.

Although there is still a long way to go, Intel has already certified that their 14th Gen Meteor Lake CPUs are booting properly in a variety of operating systems, as stated in the company’s 2022 Q1 earnings report.

The new CPUs, which will be based on the ‘Intel 4’ process node, will deliver a 20% increase in performance per watt thanks to EUV technology and are expected to tape out in 2H 2022. (manufacturing-ready). The first Meteor Lake CPUs are slated to ship in the first half of 2023, with availability following later that year.

Intel claims that the 14th Gen Meteor Lake CPUs will have a fresh new tiled architecture, which essentially means that the corporation has decided to go full chiplet. The Meteor Lake CPUs have three major tiles. There are three types of tiles: IO, SOC, and Compute. The CPU Tile and the GFX Tile make up the Compute Tile. The CPU Tile will have a revolutionary hybrid core design that will give better throughput while using less power, while the graphics tile will be unlike anything we’ve seen before.

According to Raja Koduri, the Meteor Lake CPUs would use a tiled Arc graphics-powered GPU, making it a completely new class of graphics on a chip. It is classified as a tGPU (Tiled GPU / Next-Gen Graphics Engine) because it is neither an iGPU nor a dGPU.

The new Xe-HPG graphics architecture will be used in the Meteor Lake CPUs, allowing for enhanced performance while maintaining the same level of power efficiency as conventional integrated GPUs. This will also improve compatibility for DirectX 12 Ultimate and XeSS, which are now only available in the Alchemist lineup.
