According to a report by Mail Online, Amazon is eyeing to gain the naming rights for the newly built Tottenham Hotspur stadium.
Tottenham Hotspur has spent £1billion to built their new stadium. It is a state-of-the-art stadium with 62,000 seats. Chairman Daniel Levy is hoping to recoup some substantial amount by securing a name deal.
Tottenham’s kit sponsors Nike was thought to be the one leading the race to gain the naming rights. But Amazon has also entered the race now and they can easily afford the deal as it emerged the company’s value reached £1.1trillion on Wednesday.
Daniel Levy is trying to secure a £25million per season deal for 10 years. If Amazon purchases the naming rights for £250million, it would be the most lucrative stadium agreement of its kind in history.
Amazon has already identified Tottenham Hotspur as the next team after Manchester City for their ‘All or Nothing’ docuseries. They are currently filming inside Tottenham. This newly built relationship can help Amazon to tilt the favour in their side and get the deal.
The Tottenham Hotspur stadium hosts Premier League and Champions League games which attract thousands of people. It also hosts NFL games and other high-profile sporting and social events. All these things make the naming rights of the stadium such a huge deal.
The Coronavirus pandemic has halted all the sporting events and may also affect the financial terms of the deal. The club is already facing financial problems to pay their employees.
Among all the tensions regarding the pandemic, Tottenham is the first Premier League club to transform their stadium into a facility for NHS. The stadium has started hosting Coronavirus tests from Tuesday. They have created a drive-through test facility in their stadium’s car parking basement.
