Asia Cup 2022: Sri Lanka to host the T20 format tournament in August-September
Asia Cup is a biennial event that was played for the last time in 2018. The tournament got cancelled by ACC in 2020 due to the breakage in cricket calendars because of the unexpected Covid 19 pandemic. The council later rescheduled the dates on the June-July 2021 calendar but again due to the pandemic, it got cancelled. The 22 edition of the tournament was supposed to be held in Pakistan but again it got changed.
The qualifier spot will have high competition between UAE and Kuwait(progressed from the 2020 ACC West Region T20), and Singapore and Hong Kong (progressed from the 2020 ACC Eastern Region T20).
The tournament was first played in 1984 and has 14 successful editions. India has won maximum titles (seven), in the years 1984, 1988, 1990/91, 1995, 2010, 2016 and 2018. Sri Lanka is the second most successful team of the tournament having five victories, 1986, 1997, 2004, 2008 and 2014, and Pakistan have won the remaining two editions, those of 2000 and 2012
After 2016, this is the second time, the tournament will be played in a T20 format. The 2020 edition was the precursor to the T20 World Cup in the same year and it was preponed to 2021 and played in UAE due to the pandemic emergency.
