NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 powered by ‘Ada Lovelace’ to come with up to 600W TGP

The latest details about NVIDIA’s Ada Lovelace-powered GeForce RTX 40 series GPUs have surfaced according to reputed leakers Kopite7kimi and Greymon55. The new information gives us a better idea of what the TGPs for the enthusiast lineup might look like, and it appears that we’re in for some hot chips.

The first specifications for NVIDIA’s Ada Lovelace GPU range have already leaked, and this GPU will be used to power the GeForce RTX 40 series graphics cards. According to the most recent speculation about the chips, the AD102 and AD103 GPUs will be power-hungry beasts, unlike anything we’ve seen before. This isn’t the first time we’ve talked about Ada Lovelace being a power hog, but Kopite7kimi, who has a track record of being spot on with his leaks, has confirmed that the RTX 4090 class GPU will have a TGP of 600W.

According to the latest speculations, the NVIDIA Ada Lovelace AD102 GPU will include three graphics cards: the GeForce RTX 4090 Ti, RTX 4090, and RTX 4080. Moore’s Law is Dead reported SKU information a few days ago, which matches this. The RTX 4080, which is believed to be the most compact card with the AD102 GPU, will have a TGP of 450W, the RTX 4090 will have a TGP of 600W, and the RTX 4090 Ti will have a TGP of more than 800W.

This is why NVIDIA is putting so much money into the upcoming PCIe Gen 5 16-pin connector. A single 16-pin connector can deliver up to 600 watts to the graphics card (plus an additional 75 watts from the PCIe connector), so anything up to an RTX 4090 may be powered by a single connector. The RTX 4090 Ti, on the other hand, is completely another beast, and if this rumour is true, it will feature dual 16-pin connectors. Cooling an Ada Lovelace AD102 GPU will be a significant problem for NVIDIA’s engineers, as well as their AIB engineers.

There are now just a few cooling technologies that can provide the cooling performance of over 400 Watts. This generation, all AIB partners launched triple-slot graphics cards, and with the RTX 3090 Ti’s 450W TGP on the way, engineers will have a great learning curve before the debut of Ada Lovelace GeForce RTX 40 series graphics cards.

According to sources, whereas GA102 made triple-slot cooling solutions commonplace, AD102 would make 4-slot cooling solutions commonplace on high-end graphics cards. One thing is certain: we will see some truly unique cooling methods, with the majority of AIBs opting for the AIO hybrid/liquid-cooled path on the top models.

The NVIDIA Ada Lovelace GPU family is intended to be a generational leap in the same way that the Maxwell to Pascal transition was. Despite paying billions of dollars to purchase those good TSMC 5nm wafers, NVIDIA anticipates supply and pricing to be equal to existing cards when it launches in the second half of 2022.
