Micron Technology, Inc. is sampling the world’s first 176-layer NAND solid-state drive (SSD) for data centres. The Micron 7450 SSD with NVMe has a quality-of-service (QoS) latency of two milliseconds (ms) or less, an extensive capacity range, and the broadest range of form factors available to satisfy the demands of the most demanding workloads.
Micron’s industry-leading NAND, with 176 layers of storage cells and validated CMOS-under-the-array technology for an ultra-efficient method, is used in the new data centre SSD. This vertically integrated SSD, which is equipped with Micron’s DRAM, an internally built SoC, and accompanying firmware, allows the company to respond quickly to market demands while also ensuring device security.
In typical, diversified, and random workloads, the 7450 SSD achieves latency levels of 2 ms or less for 99.9999 per cent QoS, boosting performance in databases like Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle, MySQL, RocksDB, Cassandra, Aerospike, and many others. When compared to typical SATA SSDs, latency is reduced by nearly half, and read bandwidth is increased by a factor of twelve.
The 7450 SSD has a wide range of capacity options to meet the data centre’s various requirements. The new SSD’s huge capacity span ranges from 400GB to 15.36 TB, with an industry-leading capacity of 8TB in a tight E1.S form factor. Furthermore, the most extensive collection of form factors for data centre SSDs in the industry addresses the unique challenges of data centre applications.
Last year, businesses who used high encryption standards for data at rest and in motion experienced a mild data breach that cost them 29.4 per cent less than businesses that used low or no encryption practices. Micron’s Secure Execution Environment (SEE) provides additional data protection by delivering dedicated security processing hardware with physical isolation. SEE uses dedicated memory, secure code, and a security processing engine to increase data security at rest significantly. Micron SSDs have self-encrypting disc capabilities and Microsoft eDrive options, which assist prevent data breaches and adjusting security to specific data protection needs.
The Micron 7450 SSD now supports Open Compute Project (OCP) installations for qualified environments. The OCP specifications have spawned a thriving ecosystem and a standardised strategy that aids in the reduction of integration complexity and accelerates time to market.
Many customers have praised the Micron 7450 SSD, certified by several hyperscalers, data centres, and critical OEMs. Beginning in April, clients will be able to acquire it through distribution.
