Beginning this summer, the IRS will compel taxpayers who access and complete their procedures online to sign up for and verify their identification using a mobile platform that relies on a third party (business).
To begin the new log-in procedure, users must send a government ID, a copy of a utility bill, and a selfie to ID.me, a Virginia-based identity verification company.
ID.me: Who is it and How Does It Work?
ID.me is a “recognised technology provider of identity verification and sign-in services,” according to the Internal Revenue Service. ID.me already has intentions for businesses and governments.
It is critical, according to the IRS Commissioner, to protect their users with safety measures.
In a statement, its Commissioner Charles Rettig stated, “Identity verification is vital to protect taxpayers and their information.” “The company has been hard at work to improve this area, and this new verification method is intended to make IRS online applications as secure as possible for customers.”
Regular users will utilise their existing login credentials to access the IRS website. To begin the identity verification procedure, new users must upload a photo of an identity document such as a driver’s licence, state ID, or passport.
To complete the procedure and access different IRS tools, users will need to take a selfie with a smartphone or computer webcam.
The IRS is implementing a new identification verification system.
ID.me is used by more than only the IRS. However, you must complete the verification process in order to check your balance, Child Tax Credits, and other online choices provided by the IRS.
The following is a list of the options available with ID.me:
– A web-based account
-Types of transcripts in the Form 1040 series
– Contract for Online Payment
-Update Portal for Child Tax Credits
– PIN for Identity Safety
