Ubisoft shutting down its free-to-play battle royale shooter Hyper Scape

Hyper Scape, Ubisoft’s free-to-play cyberpunk battle royale shooter, will be discontinued in 2020. The studio didn’t specify a specific explanation for the game’s cancellation, but they did agree that they could’ve done more with it, saying that “important learnings from this game will be applied to future projects.” On April 28th, the game will be turned off.

Ubisoft stated in a recent, short blog post that it will be winding down the development of Hyper Scape in a few months, praising the community for their dedication and passion. There are no send-off rewards for players yet, though we expect something will be included as a thank you package for loyal gamers.

Unfortunately, Hyper Scape came out at the height of the battle royale mania in the game world. Fortnite and Apex Legends, the two most well-known and well-received games in the genre, meant that Hyper Scape had to contend with some large competitors on the market. Despite delivering a cyberpunk design and more vertical, fast-paced action than Apex Legends, Hyper Scape was never able to compete with the likes of Apex Legends in the battle royale genre.

At initially, the player counts were good, but as time went on, it became clear that battle royale participants were losing interest. As a result, Ubisoft has implemented an extremely gradual update and fix rollout, especially when contrasted to Fortnite’s quick, substantial updates.

Despite the closure of Hyper Scape, Ubisoft is back in the battle royale gaming business with Ghost Recon Frontline, a new battle royale game centered in the Ghost Recon universe. Let’s hope they give it the support it needs to succeed; else, it could end up like Hyper Scape.
