On Friday, Newcastle began its first transfer window under Saudi ownership by signing England fullback Kieran Trippier from Atletico Madrid, demonstrating the caliber of player the club can recruit now that it is one of the world’s wealthiest.

Signing Trippier

Trippier, who began the European Championship final in July, has left the Spanish champion for a Premier League club fighting relegation. The move is said to have cost Newcastle 12 million pounds ($16.25 million).

Newcastle is in the lowest place in the league, having won only one of its 19 games thus far. Its chances of avoiding relegation could be determined by the success of its January transfer window.

Following the purchase of Newcastle by a Saudi Arabian sovereign wealth fund in October, the club now has much more money than its relegation rivals, and further high-profile additions could be made this month.

Trippier returns to the Premier League after leaving Tottenham for Atletico Madrid 212 years ago. He formerly worked for Burnley under Eddie Howe, who is now in charge of Newcastle.

Trippier said: “I really enjoyed my time in Madrid, but when I became aware of interest from Newcastle United and having worked with Eddie Howe before, I knew this was where I wanted to be.”

“I’m aware there is a lot of work ahead of us but I know the demands of Premier League well and I know what an amazing club this is with very talented players. I can’t wait to get started.”

About the English Footballer

Kieran John Trippier is an English footballer who plays right defender for Newcastle United in the Premier League and the England national team. Trippier began his career in Manchester City’s junior system but was unable to break into the first squad, despite two loan spells with Championship club Barnsley.

In 2012–13 and 2013–14, he was named to the Championship PFA Team of the Year for two consecutive seasons. He was promoted to the Premier League with Burnley after the team finished second in the Championship in 2014.

Trippier also played for England at all levels, from under-18 to under-21, and competed in the 2009 UEFA European Under-19 Championship and the 2009 FIFA U-20 World Cup. He made his senior international debut in June 2017 and was a member of the 2018 FIFA World Cup semi-finalist team.
