With his late goal against Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga, Robert Lewandowski equalled Cristiano Ronaldo’s tally of scoring 69 goals in one year. The Polish forward has scored 43 Bundesliga goals in 2021, which is also a record.
Robert Lewandowski matches Ronaldo
Cristiano Ronaldo netted 69 goals in 59 games, back in 2013. The Portuguese forward would go on to lift his second Ballon d’Or award as a result.
While Robert Lewandowski was one of the favourites to win the Ballon d’Or award this year, he finished second to Lionel Messi. The Bayern Munich forward also had an incredible 2020, but the award was scrapped by France Football.
Surpassing Gerd Muller
Gerd Muller’s record of scoring 40 goals in one Bundesliga season was broken by Lewandowski last year. In the final game of the season, the 33-year-old netted his 41st goal of the season to break the long-standing record.
This year, he has surpassed the iconic forward again. Lewandowski’s 43 Bundesliga goals this year means that he has one more than Muller’s 42 goals in a year.
While the Poland international may have missed out on the Ballon d’Or award, he was given consolation in the form of the striker of the year award. And apart from individual achievements, he may be firing Bayern Munich to a tenth straight league title at the end of the year.
A Champions League quarter final berth also looks very achievable since they are up against RB Salzburg.
