Borussia Monchengladbach 5-0 Bayern Munich: Foals smash Bavarians with full line-up

Bayern Munich were eliminated from the DFB Pokal by Borussia Monchengladbach, winning the game 5-0. This is the worst ever defeat that the Bavarians have faced in the German Cup. The last time Bayern conceded five goals was in 2019. The 5-1 defeat to Eintracht Frankfurt proved to be the last game in charge for then-manager Niko Kovac.

Breel Embolo and Ramy Bensebaini both scored doubles for the Foals in the historic win. They were joined by Kouadio Kone, who scored his first goal for Monchengladbach in the game.

“I’m absolutely shocked,” Bayern sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic told ARD after the game. “We just weren’t in that match. In every situation they were tougher than us.

“A collective blackout. That was inexplicable. We know how difficult it is always in Gladbach, we discussed that beforehand. It’s all difficult to explain, I have to be honest.”

Bayern Munich manager Julian Nagelsmann was not at the sidelines because of COVID. His right-hand man, Dino Topmoller was at the sidelines for the game in his stead. However, things did not go according to plan for the Bundesliga winners at Borussia Park.

Bayern Munich were eliminated at the same stage last season. This marks the first time since 1994-95 and 1995-96 that they have failed to reach the last 16 of the tournament. Bayern fielded their first choice lineup, with all their stars present. However, they were unable to operate as a unit and were destroyed by Gladbach.
