Apple’s new M1 Max is on par with desktop Radeon Pro Vega 56 in Geekbench 5 Metal test

Apple boldly announced its new SoC – M1 Max at its “Apple Unleashed” event last week and started taking pre-orders of these new MacBook Pros already, who will receive them eventually.

However, if you are still waiting to make your decision they may have to wait much longer as the shipping estimates of new orders have been pushed back to late December. Also, you can now get a better reference of the new MacBook Pro with M1 Max’s performances as it has widely surfaced in almost all benchmarks.

Among them, an important benchmark for GPUs is Geekbench 5’s Metal benchmark where the M1 Max’s 10-core CPU already delivers twice the performance of the M1 chip. While Metal score from Geekbench 5 shows that the M1 Max offers up to a staggering 181% faster graphics than the previous 16-inch MacBook Pro.

Now, on the Geekbench website there’s another benchmark shows that the GPU of the M1 Max chip scored a mouth-watering 68,870 in the Geekbench 5 Metal test. Also, as per the test screenshot, this variant comes wuth 64GB of unified RAM. i.e. the highest-end variant.

When compared to the older AMD Radeon Pro 5300M GPU seen on the previous 16-inch MacBook Pro, the score proves the new M1 Max delivers 181% faster graphics, as the AMD 5300M scores only 24,461 points in the same Geekbench 5 Metal test. The M1 Max is also 62% more powerful than the highes-end Radeon Pro 5600M GPU seen on the previous MacBook Pro 16.

If you compare the results with a dektop-level GPU, the M1 Max’s 32-core GPU is on par with the AMD Radeon Pro Vega 56 that scores 69,229 in the same Geekbench 5 Metal test. The staggering 400GB/s of memory bandwidth and a huge $3,499 price tag of the M1 Max powered variant justifies its “Apple Tax” users have to pay.
