Manchester United were defeated 5-0 by arch rivals Liverpool at Old Trafford, with Mohamed Salah bagging a hat-trick against the hosts. The Egyptian winger is now the highest scoring African player in the Premier League, overtaking Didier Drogba’s tally of scoring 104 goals during his time with Chelsea.
Naby Kieta opened the scoring for the visitors within the first five minutes, and within 13 minutes, Liverpool had doubled their lead. The Merseyside club have scored three goals or more in all of their away games this season, and Mohamed Salah then began his scoring spree.
Salah scored twice before half time to send Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and his team four goals down at the end of the first period. The number 11 completed his hat-trick in the second half, with Liverpool extending their lead to five goals with no reply. Salah is also the second ever Liverpool player to score a hat-trick for the club at Manchester United.
Cristiano Ronaldo thought he had pulled one back for his team, but VAR ruled out the goal for offside. Manchester United fans started leaving the stadium at this point, and Paul Pogba was sent off at the hour mark for a very rash challenge on Naby Kieta.
The Liverpool midfielder had to be stretchered off and was replaced by Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. Despite being a man down, Manchester United didn’t concede any more. But the damage was far too much to repair at this point and Liverpool walked away with three well earned points away from home.
