Samsung’s Exynos 2200 with AMD’s RDNA2 GPU struggles to barely beat the Exynos 2100 SoC

The upcoming Samsung Exynos 2200 is a huge step for both the South Korean giant and the mobile chip industry as well. It is because as we know it will be the first chipset to sport ARM cores paired with AMD’s revolutionary RDNA2 graphics, making its debut on smartphones for the first time.

We know the capability of RDNA2 via the Radeon RX 6000 series GPUs, new Xbox & Playstation consoles and of course, the new handheld consoles like Steam Deck are using RDNA2 to make powerful portable gaming devices. Now, thanks to reliable tipster Ice universe we have the official specs of Exynos 2200.

Correct, this is only the frequency of S22 Ultra, S22+ is different

— ICE UNIVERSE (@UniverseIce) September 15, 2021

As we already knew from the leaks and rumours Exynos 2200 chipset would come with one Cortex-X2 core and according to Ice universe that should boast a clock speed as high as 2.9GHz. Also, you have most probably the Cortex-710 based three cores with 2.8GHz speed and four efficient cores with 2.2GHz frequency.

This is in line with the configuration of the Snapdragon 895 with 1+3+2+2 four-cluster architecture, the only difference being the upcoming Snapdragon chip will have a mixture of Kryo 780 energy-efficient core based on Cortex-510 (High Frequency), along with the Kryo 780 energy efficiency small core based on Cortex-A510 (low frequency).

Samsung smartphones to soon start featuring AMD’s mRDNA2 GPUs

For the first time, we have got some GPU frequency as well for the mRDNA2 GPU inside the Exynos 2200, now reported to come with 1250MHz clock speeds. If you do not know, the AMD GPU inside the chip will come with six RDNA2 Compute Units featuring 384 Streaming Processors in total.

So, as Tom’s Hardware points out, with the operating frequency of 1250 MHz, the mRNDA2 GPU could deliver around one TFLOPS of computing power for FP32 (double that for FP16).

This could be game-changing for the mobile SoCs as for the first time, we will see huge improvements in mobile GPU performance even better than Snapdragons and A15 Bionic as well. It’s taking some time for Samsung to reveal the official specs but the number of leaks coming up so fast means it will launch the SoC soon.
