Manchester United were handed a shock defeat in their opening contest in the 21/22 Champions League season, as BSC Young Boys snatched a late victory to beat them 2-1.
Cristiano Ronaldo opened the scoring at 13 minutes, after being assisted by fellow countryman Bruno Fernandes. However, Aaron Wan-Bissaka was sent off in the 35th minute for a reckless tackle on Cristopher Martins.
Ole Gunnar Solskjær had to take off Jadon Sancho and replace him with Diogo Dalot to complete the back four as a result. From that point on, Young Boys had the majority of possession. At half time, Donny Van de Beek gave way to Raphael Varane as Solskjær opted to play a more defensive game and protect their one goal lead.
Nicolas Ngamaleu netted the equaliser for the Swiss club in the 66th minute, after tapping in a deflected cross to beat David De Gea at his near post. In the 95th and final minute of the game, Young Boys completed a dramatic comeback, capitalising on a mistake by Jesse Lingard.
The England international played a wayward back pass, but it was intercepted by Jordan Siebatcheu, who slotted the ball past De Gea with virtually no time for the hosts to respond. Young Boys currently top the table with their victory over Manchester United, and will face Serie A club Atalanta next.
Manchester United, on the other hand, will be hoping to bounce back against Villareal on matchday 2 of the Champions League.
