Liverpool defeated Leeds United 3-0 at Elland Road to become joint-toppers of the Premier League table alongside title rivals Manchester United and Chelsea, all with 10 points.
Mohamed Salah scored his 100th goal for Liverpool in the Premier League to give the Merseyside club the lead. The Egyptian converted a low cross from Trend Alexander-Arnold from close range to score, and solidify his case for this season’s Golden Boot with three goals in the competition so far.
Fabinho would double the visitors’ lead after 50 minutes, shovelling the ball into the back of the net after a scramble in the penalty area. Shortly after the incident, Liverpool were trying to play out from the back, and Harvey Elliot was dribbling the ball around the centre line when he was tackled from behind by Pascal Struijk.
The Dutchman was sent off for his tackle, and the medics were immediately called onto the pitch since Elliot was seriously injured and could not walk. The teenager had to be stretchered off the pitch, with all fans around the world praying for a speedy recovery for the young Liverpool player.
Sadio Mane would score another late goal for Jürgen Klopp’s men, assisted by Thiago, to make it three in favour of Liverpool.
Leeds United had several chances in the game, but were not clinical enough to convert them. This is a problem that has been hampering the overall result of Marcelo Bielsa’s team, and perhaps the acquisition of a recognised finisher could help get the much-needed goals on the pitch.
