Although Jorginho had a chance to steal the game with a penalty early in the second half of the match. Regardless of his penalty miss, the Euro cup 2020 winners have gone 36 games without losing a game. Hence they have overtaken this record which was previously held by Brazil and Spain.

Last Friday, the Azurri tied the record with a 1-1 draw against Bulgari to tie the record. However, there were some doubts regarding whether the Italian team had tied the record because the Brazilian team had claimed that their unbeaten run in 1995 extended to 36 games. But FIFA denied Brazil’s claims and as a result, Italy has set the record for the most consecutive games without losing a match.

When did Italy last lose a football match?

Andre Silva Goal helps Portugal defeat Italy in the group stage of Nations League

Italy last lost a match three years back in 2018. The Azurri was defeated 1-0 by Portugal in the group stages of the UEFA Nations League in September. Following this defeat, Roberto Mancini has sparked a huge change in the management and as a result, the team has not lost a single game since the group stage loss.

In addition to that, the Italian team went on to conquer the Euros this summer as they defeated England on penalties and marked an incredible end to the tournament. During the Euros, the Azurri overcame great challenges like Belgium in the quarter-finals and Spain in the semis and later went on to win the finals against England.

Therefore the Italian national team has regained the position of a European giant after facing disappointment when they failed to qualify for the 2018 World Cup. In the end, it would be interesting to see for how many games will the Azzuri’s remain unbeaten.
